Welcome to IWIS!

Welcome to our blog site for the Immigrating Women in Science (IWIS) program of the Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology (SCWIST). Through this site, we are hoping to foster a community of internationally trained female professionals who can support each other to settle in Canada and find employment in their professional fields. Here you can find announcements, reports, and pictures of our events as well as  newsletters and resources packed with information relevant to female immigrants in Science, Engineering, Trades, and Technology (SETT). We will also post volunteer positions at IWIS as they become available. We would like to hear from you and know what kind of information and experience you are hoping to gain from IWIS. Check back often!

What an Event!

What an event! Last Wednesday (Nov 30th), IWIS held an interesting and stimulating event with the name of “Major Cultural Challenges Facing Female Minorities in Engineeting and Sciences”. The speaker, Mehrnoush (Noush) Sardashti was a skillful, yet full of wit and energy who spoke about every day challenges women are faced with in the work environment and how to overcome them.

Mehrnoush had presented this topic at “The Society of Women Engineers 2011 Conference” about one month ago and was pleasantly surprised and excited when the audience jumped into the discussion and brought in their own personal stories to the table.

Throughout the talk the audience was able to watch and listen to multiple interviews with successful immigrant women and see what they have been faced with in the work place and how they have  handled them. However, the event took a sharp turn as people started interacting with the speaker and brought in their own personal suggestions. The topics varied from family challenges that women are usually faced with to online resources available to them.

The event was nicely ended by people enjoying the provided snacks and networking and talking among themselves.

We hope to see you all soon in the next IWIS event coming up soon in the New Year.

Happy Holiday and New Year.
